Welcome

Annika Brown is a cabaret artist and writer of genre-leaping, rock and blues-infused, literate songs. Expect a tightrope walk between darkness and hope, between playful wickedness and tales of trials and triumphs. Her new album, The Devil's Storybook was released on November 2, 2017.

In the new year there will be a tour of her show, The Devil's Storybook Experience - a thought provoking musical journey, half play and half cabaret, the trial run of which has been enthusiastically received so far.

"Annika Brown had hit on something special ... It is going to get hotter in more ways than one! ****” — Sascha Cooper, reviewer

The Devil's Storybook Experience (Album Release Party)

Rialto Theatre, 11 Dyke Road, Brighton

To celebrate the long awaited release of "The Devil's Storybook" you'll be treated to an audience with the Devil.

“I’m always in touch with my demons; you never know when their assistance is needed.” Efrat Cybulkiewicz

Get in touch with your inner demon - dressing up welcome but optional - and let yourself be thrilled! It’s time to celebrate the dark side, the shadow - so that the world might not need to become a stage for it. It’s also time to launch “The Devil’s Storybook”, which will be presented to you by the Devil herself.

You’re in for a unique experience: a musical journey through hell and back again. (Your ears will be in heaven, though.) Expect to be unsettled, seduced and moved.
Somewhere between cabaret and a play you will meet the devil, wrapped up in music and a selection of entertaining poems from John Agard’s “From the Devil’s Pulpit”.

A sympathetic portrait of him, who is “part of the power which would/ the evil ever do/ And ever does the good.” (Goethe, Faust)

The devil doesn’t only have all the good tunes, but is also throwing in a complimentary drink, free fiendish snacks, a costume competition, and there’ll be a diabolic cocktail menu available at the bar. The devil is also planning a few surprises, but would not tell us at the time this was written.

John Agard

A unique and energetic force in contemporary British poetry, John Agard's poems combine acute social observation, puckish wit and a riotous imagination to thrilling effect. In 2012, he was selected for the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry.

The Devil

An archetypal figure whose lineage reaches back into antiquity. Mostly not as black as he’s/she’s painted.

“This thing of darkness I acknowledge mine.” - William Shakespeare

“We are each our own devil, and we make this world our hell.” - Oscar Wilde

“Don’t you know there ain’t no devil, it’s just god when he’s drunk” - Tom Waits

The Road to Hell (Is Paved with Good Tunes)

A show, half way between cabaret and a play, blending (mostly) original music by Annika Brown and poems from “From the Devil’s Pulpit” by John Agard.

Expect a hell of a ride.

A Date with the Devil - (Charity Event)

"I am always in touch with my demons: you never know when their assistence is needed." Efrat Cybulkiewicz

And this is why I felt the need for this event - for one night let's meet the devil, have fun and do something positive to help battle some of the grim and truly awful things in the world.

"A Date with the Devil" is a charity event, with the proceeds going to Lewes Actions for Refugees.

I will be teetering between light and darkness, sharing some songs from my upcoming album, some new material, some old songs. A couple of songs so old they're not even mine. And all of it framed by a sprinkling of poems from John Agard's "From the Devil's Pulpit." Obviously I'll be dressed for the occasion...

www.annikabrown.net "Very evocative." Phil Jackson, BBC South

Joining me on the night will be Adrienne Thomas and David Stevenson with an excerpt from their show "A Murder of Ravens". Tales from the dark side of the ironing board.

A series of characters tell their stories of unfulfilled dreams, revenge, murder and the magic of ravens...

"An Intense performance with depth, humour, pathos, melancholy and joy. Her voice ranges from sledgehammer to feather fan." Arthur Brown (God of Hellfire)

Expect some darkness, a lot of fun, music, stories and a bar. Fancy dress definitely encouraged.

"Now that we've all been introduced, Why not mingle, hang loose, be seduced." (John Agard)
